English Arts and Crafts Oak Armoire in original finish, likely Shapland & Petter 1890
This sweet form is "fresh off the truck" in the condition in which we found it. English Arts and Crafts Oak Armoire in original finish, likely Shapland & Petter 1890. As usual from these makers, a beautiful form including repousse panels, cut-outs, excellent hardware such as the exquisite coat hooks, strap hinges and single heart shaped hinge. Interesting exterior shelves and old, but added, shelves to the interior. With the added removable shelves it can be used as a tall dresser, a bookcase or without the shelves clothing can be hung on the remaining hooks inside. The outside is functional with umbrella holders and coat & hat hooks on both sides. The lightened areas around the hardware appear to be from a practice common in the UK of polishing metalware, though it must have been decades ago since the patina to the metal has become somewhat time patinated. There is some polish residue in the grain near some of the hardware. This can easily be removed when we wax the cabinet after we perform a light cleaning. The light areas at the feet are the result of well over 100 years of mopping the floor around it. We can touch up the lightened areas until they all but disappear or leave them "as found" as some collectors prefer. Exquisite quarter sawed white oak ray flake. A truly quality piece. Drip pans for the umbrella holders on each side may or may not be included, we will be looking in our truck. Measures: 36" wide at the body, 48" wide, including the drip pan supports at the base x 15 1/2" deep x 76" high. Reasonable & dependable national shipping available.
